The Pampas
In quechua, the language of the Incas, the
word
“pampa” means open or empty space between
mountains.
Spanish conquistadores (conquerors),
used the word
pampas to name the vast extension of flat grassland
around Buenos Aires.
The name is widely known and refers to this vast
region, of some half million sq km. Mostly a sea of
grasses, but also marshland, swamps, and forests
